چکیده

Electron beams narrowly collimated to the magnetic field line were observed continuously from a downward current region to an auroral acceleration region (i.e., upward current region). They were well correlated with lowfrequency electric field fluctuations in the auroral acceleration region as well as in the adjacent downward current region. Magnetic field fluctuations were found only in the downward current region. The analysis suggests that static field-aligned electric fields are not fully responsible for the filed-aligned electron acceleration; the ac electric field, presumably associated with Alfvenic fluctuations, should also be involved in the acceleration of ionospheric electrons.

Laboratory studies of field-aligned density striations and their relationship to auroral processes*

Magnetic field-aligned structures in current, density, and temperature are common features of the auroral ionospheric plasma. These structures both generate and transform low frequency waves in the plasma. The results of laboratory studies of two processes involving magnetic field-aligned density depletions ~striations! that play a role in auroral plasma dynamics are presented. The first proces...

AKR breakup and auroral particle acceleration at substorm onset

[1] The dynamical behavior of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) is investigated in connection with auroral particle acceleration at substorm onsets using high-time-resolution wave spectrograms provided by Polar/PWI electric field observations. AKR develops explosively at altitudes above a preexisting low-altitude AKR source at substorm onsets. This ‘‘AKR breakup’’ suggests an abrupt formation ...

Characteristics of quasi-static potential structures observed in the auroral return current region by Cluster

Temporal and spatial characteristics of intense quasi-static electric fields and associated electric potential structures in the return current region are discussed using Cluster observations at geocentric distances of about 5 Earth radii. Results are presented from four Cluster encounters with such acceleration structures to illustrate common as well as different features of such structures. T...

Particle Acceleration and Wave Phenomena in the Auroral Region

1 I n t r o d u c t i o n The auroral region of the terrestrial magnetosphere is a fascinating part of space, and also a part that can be investigated in some detail with satellites, sounding rockets and groundbased instruments. The second EGS Alfv~n conference held in Stockholm May 3-7 1999 was devoted to auroral particle acceleration and related topics. This meeting produced a variety of inte...

Vertical evolution of auroral acceleration at substorm onset

This study describes the onset process of auroral substorms in connection with the vertical evolution of auroral particle acceleration, on the basis of auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) dynamics. We show that the auroral acceleration process at substorm onset basically consists of two stages: (1) appearance/intensification of a low-altitude acceleration region at 4000–5000 km accompanied by in...
